CHAPTER 12

Ava

I’m covered in flour and sugar and I’m pretty sure I have frosting in my hair. So goes the life of a cupcake baker, I guess. I never really imagined this would be where I’d end up, but there is no where I’d rather be than right here with my best friend. Callie has taken care of me my whole life and I’m more than happy to return the favor.

When she said she was ready to open her bakery, I was ready to host a parade for her. I was so happy for my friend. Then, she said she was doing it in some town I’d never heard of in Georgia, and my happy train came to a screeching halt.

Not that I had a problem with moving, but for a second, it crossed my mind that maybe she wanted to do this on her own. Maybe she was tired of me always tagging along. We were together all through school, then we went to college together. Surely, she was ready to be on her own. But what would that mean for me?

Other than Jack and Grace, Callie is the only constant in my life. I could never depend on my parents to show up for school functions, dance recitals, cross country meets or anything that had to do with me. But when they needed me, I had no choice but to be there.

They were all too happy to parade around their pretty princess in front of all their friends at the club—like they had anything to do with my accomplishments. I kept thinking if I was the prettiest, the smartest, the most talented, that eventually they’d actually show up for once. But they never did. If it weren’t for Callie’s parents and Jack and Grace, there would’ve been no one there to cheer me on but Callie.

But before I could get too carried away in thinking my friend was finally ready to head out without me, she quickly began talking about how we were going to have the most successful bakery in the Savannah area. “We” as in plural, as in me and her. I was relieved to know she wasn’t quite ready to get rid of me.

So here we are, all sticky and messy, covered in cupcakes and having the time of our lives. Callie manages the kitchen, but I run the business. Now that I think about it, we’re a lot like Asher and Christian.

While Asher learned everything there is to know about fixing cars from his dad, Christian got his business degree so he could run the other side of the shop. And while Callie went to culinary school, I got my degree in business right alongside her. At the time, I had no idea what I was gonna do with a business degree, but now here we are, and it couldn’t have worked out better. And now we’re dating brothers with similar paths, who happen to have their business right next to ours. Huh.

“What’s that look on your face?” Callie asks me.
